ACTIVITIES OF UNIVERSITIES OF THE THIRD AGE IN THE REPUBLIC OF POLAND
Abstract
The activities of the universities of the third age in the Republic of Poland have become important in the context of the aging of Polish society. The universities of the third age serve as important educational and cultural centers for adults of 50-60+. Through their mediation, this category of adults has the opportunity not only to acquire new skills, knowledge, competences, but also to take an active part in the life of the local community. The universities of the third age act on the basis of institutional models: in higher education institutions that provide training for older adults; at houses of culture, libraries, cultural and educational centers, which are a space for organizing sports and entertaining events, new acquaintances, trips that promotes personal development; at public and non-governmental organizations, and also as independent structures.
The universities of the third age contribute to the intellectual and social development, physical activity of the elderly, the deepening of knowledge and skills of the elderly, maintain the contacts with institutions such as medical services, cultural centers, rehabilitation centers, involving students in sports and tourism activities, environmental activities for the benefit of the surrounding. In addition, the universities of the third age play an important role in supporting social networking and interpersonal communication among older people. Due to the wide variety of curricula and extra-curricular activity, the universities of the third age provide active living for this category of adult population through continuing education and training.
