DEVELOPMENT OF DISTANCE EDUCATION IN CANADIAN UNIVERSITIES
Abstract
The review article is devoted to the problem of research and analysis of the state of development of distance and open education in Canadian higher education institutions. This process is characterized as a natural process of education evolution, the formation of which can be divided into three stages. Each stage of the formation and development of open and distance universities in Canada at the end of the 20th – beginning of the 21st century is scientifically substantiated and defined. Each stage is defined, which consists of different generations of information media and is limited by certain periods of time. The socio-economic prerequisites of development are substantiated and the main idea of the concept of open and distance universities in Canada at the end of the 20th – beginning of the 21st century is characterized. The specifics of the organization of the educational process in the most popular open and distance universities of various Canadian provinces are highlighted. The activities of leading Canadian institutions of open and distance education are analyzed, including the first Open University of Athabasca, Thompson Open University in British Columbia, University of Guelph in Ontario, Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Nipissing University, Queen's University in Ontario, Ryerson University in Ontario, Wilfred Laurier University in Ontario, University of Western Ontario, York University in Ontario, Distance Learning University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University and some others. Statistical data on the number of students, the number of structural subdivisions of educational institutions and their provision of educational services are given. Thus, it has been proven that distance and open education in Canada are successfully integrated into the educational process and are aimed at training highly qualified specialists in various fields. The progressive experience is analyzed and the prospects of creative use of forward-looking ideas and development trends of Canadian higher education in the modern educational sphere of Ukraine are outlined.
