Abstract
The article is devoted to theoretical generalization of partial empirical studies of medical competence of the adult population different groups in Ukraine. The relevance of the article is a focus on the implementation of one of the most important Sustainable Development Goals in Ukraine – Goal 3 «Strong Health and Wellbeing». The research tasks are to describe and compare the results of Ukrainian adult medical competence researches; to identify common features of the research problems in medical competence among Ukrainian respondents; to develop recommendations for improving medical competence. A data extraction form was developed for the study to facilitate the collection and sorting of key information from research articles: year of publication; author(s); country of origin; characteristics of respondents who took part in the experiment. Medical competence (sanitary literacy) of the adult population is a set of theoretical and practical knowledge, abilities and skills of adults regarding the preservation and maintenance of their own and public health. The results of the research by American, Canadian, and European scientists on the medical competence of adults are theoretically analyzed in the article. The results of Ukrainian sociological studies of medical literacy among doctors-specialists in health care management were thoroughly considered. A survey of elderly people in the «forced refugees of the Russian-Ukrainian war» category was conducted. It is proven that all respondents pointed to the need for additional training in the issues of maintaining and preserving one's own and public health in the conditions of non-formal and informal education of adults. Increasing the levels of medical competence of adults in Ukraine can be achieved as a result of providing information on health issues to various categories of the adult population, organizing effective communication and structured informal education. State policy aimed at improving the medical competence of the adult population is one of the priority directions for improving the health care system.
Key words: adult population; medical competence; adult education; sanitary literacy.
