FORMS AND METHODS OF ENCOURAGING US TEACHERS TO ENGAGE IN PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Abstract

The review article summarises the leading forms and methods of encouraging teachers to engage in professional activities in the United States of America. It is found that today in the United States there is a serious problem of attracting capable young people to the teaching profession. It is established that American scholars rightly insist that the reward for providing quality secondary education is a powerful motivation for talented teachers, acts as a powerful incentive to continue teaching and have a good education. Experts rightly point out that any profession that is not motivated will not be able to attract or retain creative, dedicated individuals. The study suggests that both the National Commission on Excellence in Education and the Council on Foreign Relations are strong supporters of the use of incentives for American teachers. It has been found that the leading forms and methods of encouraging American teachers to engage in professional activities are: providing salary supplements, travel reimbursement, organization of free time, covering transport costs, housing assistance, having a small number of students in the classroom, providing teachers with opportunities for continuous professional development, organizing training courses. It is determined that the effective forms and methods of motivating US teachers to self-improvement include the following: allocation of funds for the purchase of educational materials, provision of various long-term and short-term vacations, rewarding the best teachers, holding "Teacher Appreciation Days" and "Teacher of the Year" competitions, organization of master classes for teachers. The effectiveness of such forms and methods of teacher incentives as: various monetary allowances, awarding certificates and letters of commendation, provision of medical and dental insurance, employer-paid life insurance, pensions, clear definition of teacher categories with increasing salaries for each step, widespread use of the "pay for quality" principle, and national plans to stimulate teacher salaries.
