THE INFLUENCE OF PHILOSOPHICAL AND PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MEDIA EDUCATION IN USA AND CANADA
Abstract
In the article the author stresses the idea about the importance of study of philosophical and pedagogical approaches to media education in USA and Canada. The number of theories (theory of mass communication, constructivism) and approaches (critical, protectionist, arts, media literacy, cultural, innoculative, eclectical) that influenced the development of media education in the countries have been mentioned. The philosophical theories of media education are based on the following principals: learning is the process of knowledge searching, constructing and reorganization performed by an individual; learning should be connected with real life; humanization of learning is implemented with help of mental behaviour patters. These principles of constructivism theory, theory of communication and theory of mass communication form conceptual bulk of media education.
Advantages and disadvantages of these approaches have been analyzed. It was explained that the main focus in scientists’ attention in media education study shifted from its analysis and understanding the way media formed social knowledge to considering media education as means of expression and esthetics. The article reveals how integration of philosophical and pedagogical approaches encourages effective implementation media education in the life of modern society and forms special and new tasks for educators working in different spheres of education (development of students’ media skepticism, prevention of media harmful influence, assessment of media esthetics, the development of youth media competence).
Media education concept and theory awareness enhances understanding their influence on the audience that may be an effective means of predicting the outcomes. The author underlines that all theories and concepts put an individual in the center of their attention. Every approach aims at developing analysis and assessment skills in such a way helping people understand media education in modern world.
